No trip to Melbourne is complete without a tour along the Great Ocean Road. This 243km stretch of road may seem like too much of a challenge to fit into one day but, trust me, you can do it. The road has just celebrated its 100th birthday having been built by soldiers returning from World War One and its existence is a testament to their hard work. The twists and turns of this epic road hug the coastline and provide you with the most stunning views and places to explore, and a carefully selected itinerary can allow you to see a great amount of it in one day. Of course, you can plan your own itinerary, but a day tour will allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy the views.
After leaving the city, you begin your adventure along the Great Ocean Road from Torquay where you catch your first glimpse of beautiful beaches with outstanding surf. A stunning beach to visit lies 20 minutes further along the road in Anglesea. Point Roadknight beach with its idyllic sandy beach is a lovely place to stop and relax and gaze across the glittering water.

As you travel along the Great Ocean Road, you’ll notice that the roadsides are lined with a particular species of tree – eucalyptus. These are the favourite food of one of Australia’s cutest inhabitants, the koala, and many of them live in the wild here. Stop at the Kennet River and gaze up into the trees. Nestled between the branches you may spot a sleeping koala! They sleep for 20 hours a day so if you spot one that’s awake consider yourself very lucky indeed! Here you can also get a picture of yourself with a king parrot. The birds here are incredibly inquisitive so don’t be surprised if a feathered friend lands on your head during your koala search.

Apollo Bay

Stop for lunch further down the road in Apollo Bay. This small town has plenty of food options including a bakery selling incredible scallop pies. Head down to the beach for a picnic looking across the sea to the boats moored at the harbour.
Trees in the Otways Rainforest
About 100km along the Great Ocean Road, you will find yourself entering the rainforest of the Otways National Park. Walkways have been created in amongst the trees for you to stroll along here. Seeing the light streaming through the canopy and hearing the birds and trickling streams will transport you into a tranquil wonderland.
The pinnacle of your trip will be the Twelve Apostles, the iconic limestone stacks that emerge ominously from the sea. Despite their name, there are only seven rock formations here. After years of erosion, some have fallen victim to the waves but, interestingly, there were only ever ten! Be aware that this area is incredibly popular, and you can expect large crowds along the walkways. However, despite the crowds, you can get to fantastic lookout spots and take as many pictures as you like. A visit here at sunset will make your trip extra memorable as you watch the sun fall behind the Apostles, illuminating them with an orange glow. As darkness begins to fall over the Great Ocean Road you can head back to Melbourne, refreshed and revitalised, and probably planning your next trip to see the rest of this incredible road!
